Campus Revisits Spark Enrollment Choice

March 14th, 2016

Congratulations! All of your time spent researching schools, filling out applications and studying for standardized tests is beginning to feel like the distant past.  It is now time, or in some cases nearly so, for decision letters to roll in.

You may have a tough decision to make or you may know exactly where you want to go. Either way we highly encourage you to take one last visit to your top choice(s) with a fresh pair of eyes. In this Teen Life article Suzanne Shaffer highlights several things to consider when revisiting a college to make sure that that it is the right fit for you.

It’s good advice for boarding school revisits, too!

After receiving offers of admission from multiple colleges, students and parents wonder how they will choose. If you’re uncertain, and even if you’re not, the best thing you can do is revisit the colleges on your list of acceptances. Since college is a major purchase and a 4-year commitment, it makes sense to go to the respective campuses one last time before making your final decision.

Boarding School: Single-gender, or co-ed?

February 22nd, 2016

Some students and parents know that an all girls’ or all boys’ school will be the best bet for boarding school. In these cases, we love to help them zero in on the subset of schools that can provide the best fit and help them explore what each school has to offer.

Yet our boarding school searches don’t always begin with the knowledge that single-gender will necessarily be better than co-ed; often, we encourage families to explore schools of both types. Through careful research, campus visits and much thoughtful family discussion, students and their parents decide over time which setting will be best.

Families currently awaiting March decision letters may find these links helpful as they weigh the benefits of single-gender education:

– National Coalition of Girls’ Schools: http://www.ncgs.org/CaseForGirls.aspx

– International Boys’ Schools Coalition: http://www.theibsc.org/page.cfm?p=1702

Our fingers are crossed in hopes that our students will receive good news from the schools they’d like to attend, whether co-ed or single-gender. Our best wishes to all! We look forward to your updates and helping you sift through options.

by Jane S. Shropshire

Lexington, KY – The 20 members of AIKCU (pronounced “IQ”), the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities, will open their doors wide to students and parents once again with Kentucky Private College Week, to be held July 18-22 this year. AIKCU member colleges are nonprofit and non-tax-supported; all are regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and offer four-year baccalaureate degrees. During Kentucky Private College Week, AIKCU members will make it especially easy to explore what they have to offer.

Recruiting more help for the college search

October 1st, 2009

From the audience of a recent presentation I made on evaluating college campuses, 90 faces were turned in my direction, listening intently. Their questions were not unusual for those involved in the college selection process: What do we look for when we tour? How do we assess a college’s fiscal health and its leadership? What will be important to convey to students?

This particular audience, however, was not filled with parents of college applicants, but with adults contemplating a new career direction in educational consulting. They came to Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania to learn more about the field, and this session was part of a four-day workshop presented by the Independent Educational Consultants Association, a professional association that sets the standard for ethics and competence in the field.
