The Price of Going Public

Lexington, KY – While our legislature ponders further assault to the funding stream of our state’s postsecondary system, House Bill 260 presents an initial public offering of sorts. It proposes to add one more state university to the mix by converting the University of Pikeville from private to public. The University of Pikeville’s president, former Governor Paul Patton, believes that if the institution could compete on price with Kentucky’s public institutions, many more students from eastern Kentucky would complete four-year degrees. He’s making a bid to take this private institution public.

Frankfort, Ky. – Virginia B. Edwards, publisher of Education Week, editor of Edweek.org and president of Editorial Projects in Education, provided a national journalistic perspective on 21st century elementary and secondary education issues at the Prichard Committee’s Fall Meeting. Held at the Kentucky History Center in Frankfort on November 18th, the meeting celebrated successful initiatives and fostered priority-setting for Committee members, setting the stage for the academic year’s endeavors.

A Framework for Life

Lexington, KY – University of Kentucky Provost Kumble Subbaswamy is visibly excited about the new Core Curriculum approved by the faculty and now being implemented. So excited, in fact, that he was shouting in the library during an opening ceremony for the new curriculum. In all fairness, the shouting was due to a temporary power outage that left him without a microphone. But he showed himself as resourceful as he hopes his students will be.
