Social Media and Admissions

Students are being encouraged to “like” colleges on Facebook and seek them out on Twitter, utilizing social media to engage in dialogue with admission offices. They ought to be aware that social media is bidirectional, and that colleges may well be reviewing whatever they can find about students online.

High school students, be aware: your application for admission may not be the only thing evaluated by admission officers. This article posted on Business Insider is sobering:

Early Applicants Pull Ahead

My students are accustomed to hearing me extol the virtues of submitting applications well ahead of deadlines. Why? Early submission conveys interest in the college as well as an ability to organize and follow through. It turns out that these qualities lead to greater success in college, too.

In this article published by The Chronicle of Higher Education, James Roche, associate provost for enrollment management at U. of Massachusetts-Amherst, reports that his study confirms the correlation between early application submission and success.
