This webinar provides information regarding the Federal Student Aid programs and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students are being encouraged to “like” colleges on Facebook and seek them out on Twitter, utilizing social media to engage in dialogue with admission offices. They ought to be aware that social media is bidirectional, and that colleges may well be reviewing whatever they can find about students online.

High school students, be aware: your application for admission may not be the only thing evaluated by admission officers. This article posted on Business Insider is sobering:

Big Data goes to college

Did you ever wonder how colleges identified you, and why they send you so much email and snail mail? Wonder whether your response makes a difference? Demonstrated interest does matter to colleges!

Kent Barnds draws interesting parallels between college admission and the NSA as he outlines ways in which colleges are using data to build each freshman class. Knowledge may not translate into power in this case but it is useful, readers.
